Trick is to turn the spindle not the nut at the rear. There's what looks like a nut on tye spindle, just a head of the bracket and visible behind the rear pulley. It's not actually a nut -- it's a hex machined onto the spindle. That's what gets turned. It allows the spindle to slip down the notch in the bracket. For complete removal, you have to get a wrench on the nut at the back eventually and turn either the nut or the spindle or both.
If that machined spot of the spindle is what you want to turn but can't get a wrench onto, you may have to find a tappet wrench, which will be thin enough to get in between the bracket and the rear of the pulley.
It's one of those mysteries. I've had them that any combination wrench slipped on just fine. Others required a tappet wrench. And I've seen them 13/16" and either 1/16 larger or smaller (I can't remember which).
