I think your first mistake was buying stuff from OEM, but you didn't ask about that. My guess is they tell you to do this bc the factory finish is poor and will see heat and go to heck in a hurry. This will just keep you muffler from getting that bright red rust in the middle. It will probably help it last a little longer. A lot of people paint black mufflers, but IIRC Farmall mufflers should be silver. We paint the 4430 muffler every year. You can get the paint at NAPA or Farm and Barn. It is kind of pricey, I bought it to paint my brake calipers a long time ago.
