similar just happened to us and our 656. Lost pto and hydraulics while under heavy pto load. all of a sudden we had gears grinding too. barely had hydraulic or pto with no load. turning the steering wheel would cause the gears to grind teeth. Splitting the tractor we found the pto driven shaft rear bearing snap ring came out of place, the driven shaft floated to the rear, causing the front needle bearing to be damaged by the driven gear. We had visibly damaged driven gear and pump gear teeth too.
If this happened to you, best case is a rear split, worst case is a double split. you may have to replace the pto gears and pump gear as well. Once you are in that far, the TA should be inspected and considered for replacement. replace your axle seals before putting her back in service as well.
