There should be a slotted lug on the back of the mag drive gear on the motor that aligns with the lugs on the mag. To get the mag set up on #1, put the cap on briefly and look a the mag right side up (coil cap on top) from the cap end. #1 is customarily at about 2 o'clock. Make a crayon mark on the mag body that lines up with the center of the #1 wire tower.
Pull the cap and put the rotor on. Turn the drive end of the mag by hand, snapping it by the other positions if needs be until the rotor starts to come up on the mark you made. Slow down and you should come to a point that feels almost like a cammed stop, and you'll find a point where the rotor will stay put. If you should snap past that point so that the rotor and drive end are all afloat and will move back and forth, go around again. Stop at each position to help you geta feel for it and set it up to rest at #1. At that point the lugs between the drive on the motor and the end of the mag should be close enough to inline to assemble and get on with the business of timing.
