I would say you have lack of lubrication damage to at least one connecting rod bearing, maybe more. If you are lucky, you may have shut it down before the bearings actually welded to the crankshaft and spun in the rod bores. At the very least you will probably have to pull the engine to remove the crankshaft and have it polished and install new bearings. More than likely you"ll have to have it re-ground. If the bearings spun in the rods, you will have to get new or reconditioned rods. If the mains spun, well, we"ll just hope that didn"t happen. Try not to get too excited until you pull the pan off and see what happened. You probably saved yourself much further damage by shutting it down when you did. I saw a JD irrigation pump engine once that ran out of oil, the Murphy shut down system failed, all the rod bearings seized, turning the crankshaft purple in the process. Didn"t hurt the mains at all, or the rods themselves. The owner couldn"t afford a new crankshaft and had us re-grind the rod journals and install new bearings only. That was in 1984. It has run every summer ever since.
