I fixed the governor on one of my 140's but I can't remember what I did (sorry, long ago).
You don't need to polarize the alternator. If it's a one wire set up you have to rev the engine higher to get it to charge. Also check out the amp meter and output voltage (about 14.5 volts is normal). May need a new alt.
The coil gets warm but not too hot to touch. If it's bad it will get really hot and eventually shut down the engine within an hour (after spitting and sputtering).
I had trouble recently with a sputtering 140 engine and found sparks were jumping all over from the SP wires (when viewed at night). Replaced the wires and all was well. Just a thought.
