It is of course necessary to remove ALL head bolts. The head on my super A seemed glued to the block too. What I did was making a makeshift rig, using two 5" wooden beams and a jack. I placed one (8 foot long) beam horizontally, one foot above the engine; one end rested in a window sill and the other end was supported by the other (7 foot long)beam, placed vertically and on the jack. Then I looped thin wire (normally used for baling hay) from every protrusion I could find on the head (boltheads, the manifold, etc.) and over the horizontal beam. Every stretch of wire running from head to beam was taut. In total I had about 25 gangs. Then I slowly moved the jack up and with a few (wooden) hammer blows she came nicely loose. WITHOUT putting severe strain on any specific point of the head.
