I'm currently painting my 400 diesel. My original plan was to remove grease with oven cleaner and a wire brush. I found that there are just too many corners and tight spots to properly remove all of the grease. So, I removed all of the major components (i.e. gas tank, hydraulic lines, manifolds, etc.) and clean each one seperately. While disassembled, it's a lot easier to make sure that you apply paint to areas that are tough to get to when assembled but visible. It's taken a lot more time than I anticipated (probably about 100 hours total). But I think that the results are worth it. Good Luck and have fun.
