I've removed the starter from my MD and there is a trick to it. I also picked up a belt pulley and added to my tractor. I found that there was no way that there was enough space between the rear of the starter of the tractor and the front of the belt pulley housing to remove the starter in the future. I compared the housing on my MD to the one on my '50 M and found that the '50 pulley housing was shaped differently in the starter area to allow for removal. I switched the two housings so that I can remove the starter from my MD in the future. Don't know if you have a belt pulley but if you have an earlier housing, it might need to be removed before the starter. Hope this helps.
