I do not know a lot about a 460 diesel, but I have a 504 diesel and they are similar in size. I have #2 or so cables and a group 31 (big 12v) battery. It starts fine when ever I need it, I can even hold the glow plugs in while cranking the motor. The glow plugs draw 24-26 amps total for four. You may have cable/terminal problems or dragging starter. I also know if the valve lash is out of spec, it can cause compression problems when starting. Simple first.
