The ID tag on 12 volt generators were originally red in color. 6v were black. 6v can be converted to 12v. at a gen shop. If it is charging now, it is probably a 12v. If it is not charging, do the following test. Charge the battery till fully charged. With it stopped/off. Jump the F terminal of the generator (small terminal) to a good shiny ground. (does not need to be disconnected from reg) Put a volt meter on the battery (across the bat posts) then start it up. At 3/4 throttle it should be making in excess of 14 volts Probably 15 or more. (an analog (needle) style meter is preferred) This is OK for several minutes. If it is it is 12v gen. If it is like 13 volts it might be a 6v with a 12v regulator. JimN
