Roger: Gary's first answer may have been correct. As I recall 656 has one of those extended serial numbers that include a series of numbers and letters giving all options on the tractor, in with actual serial number.
For some reason IH started the 656 at 8501 and the first one built in 72 was 47951, thus all actual serial numbers are either 4 or 5 digits. You just have to sort out which numbers are the serial number. It's been close to 20 year since I had one of these newer tractors, with the extended number, there is a formula for sorting this out, I just don't remember it.
What are all the numbers and letters on there? Someone will know how to sort it out. I'll bet Gary can if he studies it a bit. He's running a bunch of those newer IH tractors.
