First of all I can't imagine bolting a piece of steel to a piston and not having a balancing problem. Secondly, your question of expansion of steel vs cast iron, the expansion coefficient for steel is .0000065 and cast iron is .0000056 in/in/deg F. So, steel expands slightly more than cast iron when it heats up. Also, if you just bolt a piece of steel to the top of the piston it will likely get very hot; because of the lack of good heat conduction from the steel piece to the cast iron piston. The normal integrally cast piston uniformly conducts heat out through the cylinder walls. Roger
