You did not mention the color of the exhaust when it is warmed up and starts to sputter.
If it is emitting black smoke, it is running too rich for being up to operating temperature. To remedy, you will need to adjust carb settings or adjust float level. If that is the case, then go ahead and completely rebuild the carb while you are into it.
If it is NOT emitting black smoke, then it may be running lean. Possibly the lean condition is the result of an air leak somewhere between the carburetor, manifold and the head. Or, there may be trash in the bottom of the gas tank that partially blocks the flow of fuel to the carb. There is also a screen fitting where the fuel line goes into the carb which may be dirty.
If you have no black smoke, no air leaks and good fuel flow, then it is time to do a spark check to see if you have a weak coil or condensor.
If you have good fuel flow, no air leaks and good spark, then check your valve lash. Should be .017" hot.
