Backlash is the amount of play between the two gears. That how much one gear rotates while you are holding the other one steady. So if you have the two gears in position and you hold the one still. Than by using a dial indicator you find that when you rotate the other gear you have a backlash of say .015. That means the gear rotates .015 from left to right or vice versa before the teeth make contact once again. So again its the amount of freeplay within the teeth of two or more gears.
