An alternator will be fine. Delco 10SI is a good model. Use the system shown, and all is well. Diode, light, or resistor in the circuit to the ignition key for exciting voltage will work. If it is already 12v, no changes to the ignition should be needed. Swap the polarity of the ignition coil to negative to the distributor, and swap all terminals on the amp meter to make it read correctly. JimN
