Youre talking now abut an A, right? It should make no difference in operation. Electrically, it's just a choice between which end of the starter cable you're hooking to. For convenience and reliability, it's easier and more secure to put an eye on the end of your wire from the ammeter and hook it up on the hot stud of the starter, than it would be to cobble something onto a plain cable terminal at the battery end, and have it exposed to corrosion.
Hooking to the starter end is what I'd recommend. It will NOT cause your starter to spin while charging. The stud on the starter that the battery cable and wire to the ammeter is on top of the switch assembly. As long as the swtich is working properly, current from anywhere can only get to the starter motor when the button is depressed.
