JD: I always like to hook my ground direct to the cast chassis of the tractor. Many had it hooked elsewhere when new, however with age some of that other metal mounting has become less than ideal ground connection.
Forget the lead substitute, just a waste of money. The importance of lead was for high performance, high RPM engines. Your Farmall is neither.
I've run these tractors for 50 years, no lead came along in the 70s. I had a Farmall 300,(300 RPM faster than your M at full throttle). It's now on it's 6th set of pistons and sleeves, engine rebuilt 6 times. Lead suposedly protected valves, and we quite often rebuilt the 300 without doing much to valves. I've owned over a dozen IH gassers, including a SM, let me assure you valves are the least of your worries.
