Thats typical......If you convert to 12 volts and keep the 6 votl starter they work okay butttttttttett can be tough on starter drives due to that high initial kick in torque. In such cases I recommend the use of a lighter duty 12 volt battery, maybe 400 to 500 CCA NOTTTTTT any big honkin 1000 CCA which worsens the situation. I never had any go bad when I used 12 volts on them but its NOT rocket science to see how its harder on starter drives.
The options are use 12 and a light duty battery,,,,,have a shop convert it to 12,,,,,,,,get a new or used 12 that still fits n works,,,,,,do nothing but fix the drive and cross your fingers, it may last a longggggggggg time
