My grandfather had a 30 acre farm that I wouldn’t call a working farm but more survival. That had some hay for the one milk cow and the rest was some woods they used to hunt and heat the house and kitchen stove and the rest was food plots. He had a root cellar for the potatoes that had a heavy canvas door and I remember helping bury cabbage and carrots in wooden barrels in the ground with straw packed around the sides and top.
There was about 2 acres of cherries trees. To do all the work he had one Farmall A.
I remember the feel of that seat and the smell of the gas when he would pour from a can through the funnel. I used to drive it the two miles down a curving country road to our place so it could be used to run the buzz saw for our winter wood supply.
Anyway I have always wanted to own one and I could have used it to pull trailers when I was growing fresh market vegetables. So when this 1951 Super A came up for sale locally I bought it.
When I reached for the lever under the front lip to raise the seat I noticed the release wasn’t there and noticed that it wasn’t even an A seat.
When I got it home I went to the IH Parts site and found that the seat is from a Super H.
The old owner said that the seat had been on there when he got it many years ago. I will say, whoever did it, did a good job on the installation. It bolts right into the existing bracket. Nothing was cut so it would be easy to convert to original.
The seat was a little wobbly so I renewed the bolts and rubber bushings and now it is firm and sturdy. It is a little bit more difficult to mount because of the center pedestal fastening near the brakes but once you are on board it is a really comfortable seat and ride.
