You are asking if a remote four port open center valve can work as a double acting and single acting valve. Yes, it can. The valve lever needs a third position called "float". It is found with the lever all the way forward or back depending on how it is mounted on your tractor. Float connects all four ports together. This means that there is no energy in the hydraulic system except the potential energy of an elevated load or compressed spring. It quickly disappears when the rod is fully retracted.
