Better take another look at the IH parts books for the German engines. You will find different part numbers for the pistons, rods, block, head, and many other parts. Get a 310 next to a 358 and compare the distance from the top of the water pump to the top of the block. The difference in height is easily seen there.
The production of the 300 series engine was halted when the German engines again began appearing in farm equipment, about 1980. Production was again started in about 90 or 91 and those engines were used in some medium duty truck and bus chassis. Production was again stopped about 1995.
