I think the pan holds 4, the other quart is for the filter, it drains into the pan with the engine off. If this is true, since you have to check with it off, I don't know why IH didn't calibrate the dipstick. However this is true with cars also. My Sierra PU, and Grand Cherokee both "hold" 6 quarts, when the numbskulls at the oil change place put in 6 quarts, it is 1/2 quart over the full mark that says "do not overfill".
