I had a similar problem with my 400 diesel. There was enough rust in the tank to clog the fuel filters and starve fuel to the engine. I took a doughnut magnet (from the pan of an automotive transmission), tied a 2-foot piece of baling wire to it, and dropped it in the tank. I went for a drive in my neighbors bumpy field for five minutes and pulled the magnet to clean. After repeating about 10 times, I found that no rust was stuck to the magnet. I haven't had a problem since then.
