Long post---sorry. As to value, like anything else, I've 706 gassers bring all prices--- 5,800 bucks for a REALLY NICE one with 2800 original hours, barn-kept with and bought from the original owner with IH dealer once-a-year service records and the original paint still bright--this was about 18 months ago. Then again, one that was a little rough and needed paint but seemed mecahnically sound brought 1,400 bucks at roughtly the same time period. We wound up with one a few years back through some horse-trading and still have it. It spends most of it's time at a farm we rent where we have a feeder calf operation and it doesn't see hard use, but almost daily use of some kind. Ours is a tricycle, and a very handy tractor.
Several years ago we were chopping very good heavy corn with a strong 1066 and it blew a hydraulic line. We'd been using the 706 to pull and unload wagons at the blower (filling silo). Given the distance involved, we were going to lose a couple of hours to go get another tractor. On a whim, we hooked the 706 to the 2-row IH 550 chopper and proceeded to chop 8 loads with it and it really performed well. Yes, it used a fair amount of gas, but pulled that chopper surprisingly well and the only downtime we had was switching the chopper from the 1066 to the 706. As for gas consumption--- a neighbor has a 706 gasser which gets fairly heavy use. It developed a carb problem, and he had it rebuilt, but after a short time the carb issue returned. He searched and found a brand-new whole carb for it (over 300 bucks) and intsalled it and claims it cut his fuel consumption by 40%. I have used his tractor for several days at a time helping him, and it does use considerably less gas than it did.
