I got told by a reputable starter shop that 12 volts on a "light duty" 6- volt application will spin the starter too fast to engage the splines every time. This was on the pony engine on a Cat 112 motor grader. However, our SMTA has been doing well on a 12- volt system. This would be a "heavy duty" application??? Who knows. Our SC is still 6- volt & does very well.
