In central NJ, where I grew up, IHC dealers were never very far away. IH tractors were everywhere, probably more because of the nearness of the dealers than because of any inherent superiority of the machines. This is not to say they weren't high-quality machines. My father's 10-20 labored for 22 years before he replaced it with an H, and his F-12 probably about that long, too. They were still working, but he wanted something a little more modern and bought the H (he let the others sit out until they were junk; I wasn't interested in keeping them 60 years ago, but now I shed a tear whenever I think about those noble beasts going to waste). Neither of these tractors ever required repairs, except for a fuel-pump diaphragm on the F-12--a normal occurrence on any fuel pump in the 40s, after several years of pumping away. I think IH was a little slow to innovate, possibly because they sold so well. Most were not all that comfortable until the letter-series came out ("like driving a car" was the way a cousin put it after replacing his rough-riding, noisy beast of an F-20 with an H).
