In the late 60s when IH was ready to replace the 56 series, they had plans to build a 766 to replace the 756, 836 to replace the 826 ,866 to replace the 856,1036 to replace the 1026 ,and 1466 to replace the 1456, They also planed to introduce two more models in 1973, The 1576 and 1578 V-8 Out of these only The 1466 and 766 were made, the 836 and 866 were renamed the 966, the 1036 was renamed the 1066 and the 1576 and 1578 were renamed 1566 and 1568. These tractor were targeted to come out on NOV 1,1970 (Phase 1) and updated in 1972 (Phase 2) with a differnt cab and the fuel tank behind the cab, and the operator would sit 18In ahead of the rear axle, but the Phase 1 was delayed until Sept,1971 and Phase 2 was delayed until 1976 which became the 86 series
