Bob M has the wiring diagrams you need, but I can venture a guess as to whats happened. If a ballast resistor is too high in ohms, the spark will be weak but the coil wont overneat nor the poinst burn up fast HOWEVER if its too small in ohms she will run fine for a while and produce a good spark butttttttttttttttttt over time the coil can degarde from overheating (excess current) plus the points will burn up prematurely.
Its possible the ballast is too low in ohms and the coil has been overheated so now it breaks down once it gets warmed up although if the points were carboned up they can act similar.
Typical ballast ohms are in the 1.25 to 1.9 ohms range for use on 12 volt tractors that have a 6 volt coil. The ballast ohms shoumd be near that of the coil i.e. for a typical 1.5 ohm 6 votl coil Id want a ballast near 1.5 ohms.
You need to measure the coil ohms from its lil + to - terminals and if its a 6 votl coil Id expect around 1.5 ohms and then measure the ballast ohms n see what it is ???????????
Once the ohms are compouted you can decide how to cure the problem.........NOTE be sure n just check the poinst first because if they are carboned or burned that can cause poor or no spark and maybe all else is fine!!!!!!
If the coil and ballast are good and correct but the pointS burn up quickly THAT CAN BE CAUSED BY A BAD OR INCORRECT SIZED CONDENSOR. Soooooo if the ballast ohms is near that of the coil but the points are burned carboned Id start with a set of poinst and condensor BEFORE buying a more expensive coil
