I did the very same job over a year ago. Pull the radiator, valve cover, pushrods, lifters, oil pan and pump. Unscrew the big nut on the pulley and tap it off from behind (tap as close to the crank as possible). Jack the engine up a tiny bit to remove the front mount and remove the front cover. Unbolt the front camshaft retainer thru the gear and carefully slide the camshaft and gear assembly out.
What is wrong with your camshaft? I suspect mine was slightly bent, creating a terrible knocking noise at valve #3.
