Andrew, after some checking I still have a lot off your questions unanswered. From what I can find it looks like IH changed the head, pistons and precups at MD engine serial # 14501. The head and precups were the same as a SMD with the bore size of piston the only difference. 4 inch overbore piston for a MD was the same standard piston as a SMD. Can't find a compression ratio listed separate for a MD engine below 14501 or above. But a UD6 power unit has a serial break on pistons and head like a MD (same parts) and shows a 16.8 compression ratio after the serial break, 14.2 before. I don't have a 8228 head to look at, but the only differance there could be with heads used on a SMD that could change the compression ratio, is the size or depth of valve pockets or precup holes or length. With the same valves used I doubt the pockets are deeper. If your head isn't cracked after all this time it must be a good one. Would probably keep it.

Today's Featured Article - Experimental Tractors Article - by Danny Bowes (Dsl). Tractor technology appears to have nearly hit it's pinnacle of development. If you agreed with the subtitle, you are rather mistaken. Quite, actually. As a matter of fact, some of the technology experimented with over 40 years ago makes today's tractor technology seem absolutely stale by comparison. Experimentation, from the most complex assembly to the most simple and mundane component, is as an integral a part of any farm tractor's development
