The shifter is not spring loaded. But, be careful when you put the lid back on to make sure you do not bend the the shifting forks.
Yes, the seat and steering post are tapped into the cover. You do not need to remove the steering shaft, just fasten it out of the way. Also, remove the belt pulley drive. That lightens the weight and gives you a view into the transmission as you lower the lid
I lifted and lowered the top on mine with a chain hoist hooked to bolts screwed into the seat holes.
I used 85-90W gear oil.
For safety, put blocks under the lid before you put your hand into the rear end. All that weight could do serious damage to an arm!
