Take the band off the back of the starter housing. Slide the armature into the windings until the commutator ( with the little copper strips at the back) is back against the brushes. Pull the brushes up so they sit on the commutator. You may have to go around 1 1/2 times to get them all to stay up on the the commutator.
Before you put the armature in, clean off the commutator with a pencil eraser and put a drop of oil or a smear of grease in the bearing cup at the back. And put a little smear of grease in the bushing on the nose too.
Putting the armature in a vice might not be a good idea.
