Why would you need to buy pistons? What is wrong with the old ones?
If the only thing wrong with it is one pitted sleeve, then I would buy it in a heartbeat. You can offer less and then negotiate, but I would be willing to pay the $1000 asking price if the owner holds firm. You should be able to find a good used sleeve without too much difficulty.
