Thanks for the info. I finally heard about the 8" level, so I filled it to there. It helped the noise somewhat. I did not know about the filter. I think maybe I will run it a little and then change the filter. A new problem surfaced today. If the mower is on the ground and the tractor is dead still it is hard to steer. The steering wheel will just lock up when you try to turn. The motor will pull down making me think the pump is ok. If you lift the mower, taking some weight off the front wheel it will steer with one finger. Maybe something is binding up in the front end. I will check it tomorrow. Thanks again for the info.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
