Most of the Carb's have the manufacturer stamped on them someplace. Zenith, Carter, and Marvel are the ones I'm aware of. They also should have a serial number on them someplace which would allow you to track down either a replacement or a rebuild kit.
I've learned the gist of any non-starting issue is to look at the three major components. Have you got spark? Have you got fuel? And have you got air? If you do then it should start. It may not run well but it should start. Depending on what you find you can go further down any of those paths to try to figure out what's going on.
