Sounds like it sat for a bit with the ignition on but the engine wasn't running. Probiably did the points in. Take a look at your points. If there is a little tear drop where it looks like the points melted at somepoint replace em and the condensor. Some say you can file em and get away with it but I've had limited success doing that. If the points are ok and such I'd inspect other parts of your ignition. Your plug wires might be causing a crossfire issue. Could also be a distributer cap too.
