A few things it could be. Starter gear not sliding out all the way, Starter gear worn, ring gear worn. Take it off and check. It will be obvious which one it is. Mine was doing the same thing a few years ago. I posted the pics below here an most people told my I would have to change the flywheel too, but I guess it looks worse in the pic than it is because I have never had a problem since I changed the starter. I got a remanned one for $119 from our host here and it was less than having mine rebuilt Notice how the gear on the starter is chewed up
