The bearings are actually in a carrier, Lightly pressed on the outer race as I remember. The bearings themselves are extra heavy duty bearings, they have a full ball complement. Gorden Rice told me that "back in the day" IHC guaranteed those bearings for life. if they ever failed, IHC would replace them free. With the merger with Case, good luck with that today. The holes are there to let oil flow back into the engine. There is an oil line inside that provides oil to the bearings and since they are not sealed oil passes through to the flywheel area and needs to drain back.
