That is a very good question that I have not seen addressed. I have 2 300U's and changed both screens when I got them several years ago and they have been running good every since.
It sounds like you are already into it so you know the trials of getting to the screen.
I would think if it is possible to eliminate the resevoir screen you will have to start with a very clean resevoir.
I think you have a good idea, JimN is the resident expert on the 300/350U so hopefully he will see your post.
