My 2606 came without the $50 strainer screen when I got it so the fluid was bypassing the filter. Who knows how many years it ran without it. Probably the reason my steering doesn't work well now (messed up the pump). However my IH3000 loader has an external canister filter so it techinally has double filtration. I bought the new screen for IH. I suppose you could get you a piece of aluminum or nylon window screen and cut it to the size of the filter and stick it on with some type of hitack or gasket cement. The screen has a half circle bent metal spring that goes against the cover plate and holds the filter in tight so you need something to keep the filter tight.
The screen will catch floaters and stuff but when I cleaned it after 1 year it had a bunch of greasy fines plugging it up that I had to use carb cleaner on to clean it.
