If you can arrange it, be ready to tow-start his tractor after he shuts it down and it won't start. If it will tow start, that points to a weak battery; the starter is drawing the battery down and the spark is too weak to fire.
Another idea: Just because it doesn't die doesn't mean the coil still isn't bad. The spark may be strong enough to keep the engine running, but with the added load of the starter (see above), the hot flakey coil may not be able to produce enough spark to start the engine.
The fact that the tractor starts and he can use it normally for an extended period of time says that it is NOT a fuel problem.
