Dave, This is one mans opinion only. I have used the one wire alternators and I have used the method as per Bob Ms post. Bob Ms method replicates the set up in G M vehicles that use idiot lights in their instrument clusters. This method is not only cheaper but is much more suitable for a tractor. Many tractors sit unused for long periods. The one wire alternators have a tendency to have a minute current drain which over time will discharge the battery. I know that this is not supposed to happen but unfortunately it is a fact that it does. Additionally, some on the one wire alternators have trouble getting the excitation voltage needed to start the charging, often requiring the engine to be over reved to excite the system. I have been told by a alternator shop this was due to poor quality components being used. I have assisted numerous people having both of these problems. The G M design does not have these problems and it only takes a few more minutes to wire in the extra components.
