I had an 856 for 9 years, once. People always told me the 856 was the best tractor IH ever built.
In 9 years, all I ever did was normal maintenance. Only problem I had was one time the oil pressure light came on. Turned out the insulation had rubbed off the wire to the sender and grounded the light.
I agree, though, if you can't verify it being done recently, change the HyTran fluid and filter.
