sounds like the sprag in the TA is worn out. sounds just like our 806 acted before we replaced the TA.
I replaced the TA in our 986 a few years back. it's a much bigger job than the clutch. you have to do 2 splits, then take everything out of the center section (speed transmission). the TA is the last thing out. You don't have to remove the cab, but you do have to support the 2 front corners when you unbolt the cab supports from the center section.
what i'd do is this: split the tractor, put the center section in your pickup and take it to a dealer with a good shop. they can have a new TA in and everything back together in a day. you really need a forklift, trans. hoist, etc. for splitting the center section from the rear frame for this job.
