I switch mine back over to gas when I shut down, BUT MAKE SURE WHEN YOU PARK IT THE DECOMPRESSION LEVER IS ON DIESEL. This will make sure that the decompression valves do not warp when cooling down. It says to do this in the manual and think about it for a little bit and it will make sense.
Mine smokes a little as well. I always figured it was bc of the oily diesel still in the cyl. I know of one other SMDTA that did this as well. Those are really the only two I can remember watching run.
