Well the trans issue could be in the shift rails in the cover. Not too hard to fix. Make sure it is in neutral, pull up straight, and watch in the opening crack (Pictures are good) to locate all forks and pivots as it is lifted. Look at the shift rails to see if they are rusted. If free, look at the 3-4 sliding gear to see if it is jammed, or rusted in place. The cooling system is a different matter. I believe that the engine will not overheat in a few minutes if it was just rusty inside. The issue may be a blown head gasket, or a cracked head. See if there is antifreeze in the oil. If so there is internal leakage that needs to be repaired before operation, or it will ruin bearings. A cylinder leak down test would help define the issue (on each cylinder).
