Hi guys! Well, a while ago I posted the question asking for suggestions on what would make a new engine knock...the symptoms were that it ran fine, then after it warmed up there would be a light knocking toward the front of the engine.
Well, we tore into figuring it out this weekend. We started by quieting the water pump...the tensioner on the front was a bit sloppy, so we got that all fixed up. That wasn't the noise we had an issue with however. So, step 2 was to drop the pan and inspect the rods...we checked #1 rod and it was all torqued correctly and tested the fit with plastigauge and it was in tolerances. We tried #4 to see as well and it was also fine...so on to the front.
We split the front away and pulled the front cover off the engine to look at the gears. Nothing was obvious, everything looked great. I wanted to check the half moon key on the camshaft, so in beginning to loosen that nut, we noticed some "slop" between the cam gear and the crank gear... .024 to be exact...luckily, I had another cam gear that looked better, and after installing that one and a better looking Idler gear on the other side, the "slop" was now at .006...a definite improvement. So, back together it went.
That sure did it. No more knocking after warmed up now. Lesson learned. Thanks for the suggestions on what to look for! Hopefully someone else can use this information in the future! Here is a picture to see how it looked.
