I don't know, I'm from SD too. I was born in 1958. In south eastern SD, when I was growing up I can only remember one tractor, a Farmall 300, that had fenders. Most folks had Farmalls, next John Deeres, then a couple of Olivers and MMs. It wasn't until the mid to late 60s that fenders started to appear on a regular basis. I remenber a set on a 656 and a 3020 first, then they were on most tractors.
I think they were too expensive for most farmers (even though they might have cost less than $20. That was a lot of money back in the 40s and 50s).
Actually, I only started seeing fenders on old Farmalls when in recent years at parades and show. I think everyone thinks their tractor needs to have all the bells and whistels even though a lot of tractors were sold with just a few options (belt pulley, PTO, and hydraulics, maybe one set of weights). I think many of the folks who have their tractors completely decked out never even drove one until they were in their 40s or 50s and all their friends had one so they had to get one too. They then thought tractors weren't complete unless they had every available option. It's OK to deck them out if you want, but actually, very few tractors came that way originally.

Because of what I saw growing up, I don't like fenders on Hs and Ms now. In fact, I have 11 tractors from a C to a 450 and only 3 of them, the 300, the 350 (flat tops), and the 450, have fenders. On anything older, they just look out of place to me.

Today's Featured Article - The Fordson F Ignition System - by Anthony West. A fellow restorer contacted me earlier this year asking for some help and advice on a model F that he was restoring. He had over a period of months spent a fair amount of his hard earned cash on replacement parts for the old "trembler" ignition. Sadly though all his efforts seemed to be a waste of time and money as he still couldn''t get the temperamental old thing to run correctly!! If i said that this was a little frustrating for him that would be "conservative" in fact the problem had reduce ... [Read Article]
