We've gotta bribe big oil with taxpayer dollars to get them to use ethanol. Otherwise they have no reason to put ethanol in the fuel.
Ethanol is gallon-for-gallon more expensive than gasoline. Without the government bribes, they'd lose money putting ethanol in the gas.
I don't think this is quite the way it is, Big oil has no choice but to add ethanol to auto fuel it is required by the EPA/Federal law and in the state of MN by MN law, in MN the subsidies go to the ethanol mgf because they can't make the crap cheap enough to compete with gasoline and it take 9 gals of fuel to make 10 gals of ethanol and the pollution and waste of ground water is out of this world if any other mfg wasted and polluted the water that way they'd hauled off in irons.
